A home is the foundation everything else rests on. Whether someone is buying their first house or a landlord is planning work across thousands of them, the decision is only as good as the understanding behind it. Providing that understanding is what we do.
Buildings are what we know
We are an RICS-regulated building surveying practice working across the UK. Our work runs from Home Survey Level 2 and Level 3 reports for private buyers through to PAS 2035 retrofit assessment and coordination for social landlords and local authorities. Surveying is what we do. But it is how we do it — in plain language, with a clear view of what a defect means and what it will cost to put right — that keeps clients with us.

We work with the same landlords, contractors and local authorities across successive programmes, often for years at a time. We are independent and owner-led, and we have grown steadily since 2007 rather than quickly. That continuity matters: the people who start a programme with you are the people who finish it.
Partner with usWe train our own
People are at the centre of how this practice has been built. Our Managing Director joined as an accounts apprentice. Our Operations Director came through a business administration apprenticeship. Twenty-eight people have qualified with us through apprenticeships, placements and degrees, and we keep supporting them long after the certificate is signed. In 2025 we were named Retrofit Employer of the Year, Regional SME Apprenticeship Employer of the Year and Degree Apprenticeship Provider of the Year.

History
What began in 2007 as one surveyor working from a home office is now an RICS-regulated building surveying practice operating across the UK. Building surveying sits at the centre of what we do — RICS Home Survey Levels 2 and 3, condition reports and defect diagnosis — supported by qualified energy assessment and PAS 2035 retrofit assessment and coordination. We became an RICS Regulated firm in January 2022, and our people have been recognised at the Retrofit Academy CIC Awards in three consecutive years.
- 2007
Ash Crawford founds Crawford & Co Surveyors, working single-handed from a home office.
- 2008
The practice is incorporated as a limited company, with three new directors on the board.
- 2009
Staff and services grow, with new work supporting the sale and letting of property.
- 2010
Our first office move, renovated by our own team from an EPC rating of G up to a C.
- 2011
The team passes 20 people as demand for energy assessment and survey work keeps growing.
- 2012
A higher standard of RdSAP and energy assessment across the practice — a step up for efficiency.
- 2013
Another move into bigger offices, again renovated by our team from an E rating to a C.
- 2014
We qualify as Green Deal Assessors and become an accredited Green Deal Organisation.
- 2015
Green Deal services expand, and we go on to support the retrofit of thousands of homes.
- 2016
A new office for our growing team, renovated from an F rating up to a C — the third so far.
- 2017
Crawford & Co Surveyors celebrates ten years, from one surveyor to an established practice.
- 2018
Staff begin undergraduate degree apprenticeships at Nottingham Trent University.
- 2019
We qualify our first Retrofit Assessors and Coordinators, moving into PAS 2035 retrofit work.
- 2020
Despite the pandemic our retrofit services take off and four more begin apprenticeships.
- 2021
Jonathan Hayes becomes Technical Director, and a senior surveyor begins his Masters.
- 2022
We become RICS Regulated, our Coordinator is Highly Commended, and four Assessors qualify.
- 2023
Our Retrofit Coordinator is Highly Commended again at the Retrofit Academy CIC Awards.
- 2024
Retrofit Assessment and Coordination Services of the Year at the Retrofit Academy CIC Awards.
- 2025
Four awards in one year — Retrofit Employer of the Year, Regional SME Apprenticeship Employer of the Year, Degree Apprenticeship Provider of the Year, and Eddy named Retrofit Assessor of the Year.
- 2026
Shannon becomes Managing Director, Megan Operations Director, Cassie Commercial Director.

Marvin
Building Surveying Masters
Marvin has been with Crawford & Co Surveyors since the beginning. Brought on board by the Managing Director who mentored and help to train Marvin as a domestic and commercial energy assessor, he has helped to shape the business and the services provided. Through Crawford & Co Surveyors Marvin has qualified in delivering a number of services including more recently as one of our first Retrofit Assessors and Retrofit Coordinators. Marvin is now working towards an MSc in Building Surveying and aiming to become a RICS Chartered Surveyor.
Shannon
Accounts Apprenticeship · Surveying Technician Apprentice
Shannon joined as an apprentice in accounting, with an aptitude for business administration and with the support of Crawford & Co she has worked her way up, excelling in office management and now has responsibility for overseeing the operations of the company. Shannon has also honed her skills in the built environment through the on-going support of colleagues, she has qualified as a domestic energy assessor and a retrofit assessor, and is a strong advocate for encouraging females to consider a career in the built environment.

After completing his level 3 apprenticeship with Crawford & Co, Eddy has taken every opportunity provided for further training, qualifying as a domestic and non-domestic energy assessor, and more recently as a Retrofit Assessor and Retrofit Coordinator. Crawford & Co is pleased to be supporting Eddy through his degree apprenticeship in Building Surveying.

Jack completed his level 3 apprentice at Crawford & Co Surveyors, learning areas of the property industry through support and mentoring from our MD he is now a top Estate Agent in Dubai.

Ryan was one of our first business administration apprentices. After working through his qualification and with a background in the building industry he began his training as a domestic energy assessor and property photographer. As his skills developed as did his passion for the role more energy efficient buildings will have on the future environment, this has taken him onto a degree apprenticeship in building surveying and a qualified level 5 Retrofit Coordinator.

Business Administration Apprenticeship · Digital Marketing Degree
Megan joined Crawford & Co with a thirst for knowledge and interest in marketing, on successful completion of a business administration apprenticeship through Crawford & Co she began assisting with on and offline marketing. Her drive and ambition made Megan a perfect candidate for the degree apprenticeship in digital marketing, where on-going mentoring and support in the workplace has seen her become a team leader in the marketing department.
Shaun
Business Administration Apprenticeship, Level 2 and Level 3
Through Crawford & Co Shaun has qualified as a domestic and non-domestic energy assessor and retrofit coordinator all of which have seen him excel in his role, becoming the office manager of our technical team. We are delighted that Shaun also won Professional Apprentice of the Year at the 2022 Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Apprenticeship awards.

Social Media Apprenticeship · Digital Marketing Degree Apprenticeship
Jacob initially joined Crawford & Co Surveyors as a photographer. Using his previous experience and new knowledge gained at Crawford & Co Surveyors, Jacob is now one of our lead photographers for our Premium Photography package and training other property photographers. Crawford & Co Surveyors were happy to support Jacob to successfully complete a Level 3 apprenticeship in social media. Jacob is now studying towards a degree in digital marketing via a degree apprenticeship at Nottingham Trent University.

Lloyd has grabbed every chance for further professional development, from a property photographer to learning in depth from colleagues about the built environment, he has qualified as a domestic and non-domestic energy assessor and retrofit assessor. Seizing the opportunity to further his skills, he is now being supported through his level 6 undergraduate degree in Building Surveying.

Nidhin joined Crawford & Co Surveyors during his MBA placement year. His proactive and logical approach enabled him to produce a successful consultancy project as part of his MBA, as well as qualifying as a Retrofit Assessor and re-designing technical processes for the company. We were pleased to offer Nidhin a full time position as our Retrofit Team Leader.

Elise joined Crawford & Co Surveyors for the placement year of her BSc Building Surveying degree. We are really happy to support Elise as an aspiring RICS chartered building surveyor, and another much needed female in the construction industry. She spent two years at university learning the theory but was keen to gain hands-on experience, and has thrown herself into the work, taking every opportunity on the understanding that you get out what you put in.
