Help for Households Solar Projects, Yorkshire and the Humber

Crawford & Co assessed and coordinated these homes. Figures cover every programme where works are complete and a post-works EPC has been lodged, September 2026, and are not specific to this project.

Overview

Crawford & Co Surveyors supported solar PV projects delivered under the Help for Households energy support programmes, assessing properties for suitability and modelling the effect of generation on a household’s energy costs.

Solar is the measure households ask for most and the one most often installed in the wrong order. Our assessments establish whether the roof can carry the array, whether the orientation justifies it, and what the property’s demand actually is before generation is added to it.

Strategy

Fabric

Solar PV does nothing about heat loss. Where an assessment found significant fabric shortcomings — missing or compressed loft insulation, uninsulated cavities, failed glazing — those were recorded and put in front of the household, because insulating first changes what size of array makes sense. Roof condition is a fabric question too: an array fitted to a covering near the end of its life has to come off again.

Service

Generation, storage and consumption have to be considered together. Where battery storage or hot water diversion formed part of a project, it was assessed against the household’s actual demand pattern rather than an assumed one.

Renewables

Suitability comes down to roof orientation and pitch, shading across the year, structural capacity and the condition of the existing covering. Each of those was assessed on site rather than desk-modelled. Where a property was not suitable, the assessment said so — an unsuitable roof is a far cheaper finding at assessment than after installation.

Vital Statistics

Crawford & Co scope: Retrofit Assessment, Retrofit Coordination. Assessments recorded the property’s existing energy demand, the modelled output of the proposed array and the effect on estimated energy cost. Figures are held per property rather than averaged.

Detailing

The judgement that matters is order of operations: demand reduction before generation, and roof condition before either. Getting that wrong produces an array that performs on paper and disappoints in use.

Comfort

Lower bills, and a household that understands what its own roof can and cannot do.

Monitoring

Assessments were quality-checked before issue and the modelling returned to the client in full.
